ANTALYA NATURAL AND CULTURAL HERITAGE AREAS

ABOUT THE HISTORY OF ANTALYA

About the history of Antalya; The oldest ruins found in the Karain Cave, located about 2 km inland of Antalya, show that life in Antalya dates back to the Paleolithic period. Although Antalya is not as old as other cities covering the Mediterranean strip, it is considered one of the oldest settlements.

Antalya was founded in the 1st century BC by II. It is known that it was founded by Attalus. When the city was first founded, it was named Attaleia, inspired by the name of its founder. When the Kingdom of Pergamum passed to Rome, the region became a Roman city. When Emperor Hadrian conquered this place in 130 AD, a triumphal arch was also built in the region.

Later, the city was first captured by the Byzantines and then conquered by the Seljuk Turks in 1207. The city later became known as "Antalya". Animal Welfare:

International trade in wild animal and plant species threatens their survival. It is our duty not to support the international trade of wild animal and plant species that are in danger of extinction and to prevent those who trade them by reporting to the authorities.

For animal welfare, we should not keep wild animals in captivity, have photographs taken with them, or attend shows involving animals. We should not visit unlicensed zoos. We should not support hunting activities and prevent cruelty to any animal.

You can access the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) and all the details on https://cites.org/eng.

You can learn about threatened species by reviewing the IUCN (International Union for Conservation of Nature) Red List of Threatened Species.

Invasive Species:

Invasive species are species that enter an ecosystem other than the ecosystem they naturally live in and multiply excessively here and affect the entire ecosystem. With the increasing rate of climate change, invasive alien species disrupt the health of the ecosystem, negatively affecting biodiversity and ecosystem services as well as human health and quality of life.

Rapid detection, rapid assessment and rapid intervention are crucial in combating invasive alien species that are intentionally introduced to Turkey for aquarium, aquaculture, landscaping, fish farming and recreational purposes, or introduced naturally. Eliminating, controlling, preventing the spread and stopping the reproduction of invasive alien species is extremely important in terms of biodiversity and ecosystem services, human health, economic and social aspects. We should take measures to prevent the emergence of invasive species and use native species in landscaping and decoration.

Ağaçkakan (Picus)

These animals, which are very useful because they eat caterpillars, insects and worms that damage trees, tear the bark of greening trees in a circle in the spring, down to the wood parts. The woodpecker hits the tree trunk with its beak at regular intervals. By evaluating the reflected sounds, it discovers where the caterpillar is located on the shell. Thus, there is no need to drill in vain. It is a matter of curiosity that woodpeckers can precisely locate insects under the bark without seeing them.

TRADITIONAL HANDICRAFTS AND CRAFTS IN ANTALYA

HANDICRAFTS AND CRAFTS IN ANTALYA

Handicrafts; It can be defined as the transformation of raw materials into processed products using manual dexterity and simple hand tools. You can support both our economy and our local people who try to keep traditional handicrafts alive by purchasing the products you like in various regions of Antalya. Some of the handicrafts, which are products of a deep-rooted past based on traditional knowledge and constitute one of the important elements of our culture, are as follows:

BICYCLE

Today, Antalya is one of the places where knives are produced using traditional methods. Knife art, which is practiced in Elmalı, Kumluca and Serik districts of Antalya, adds indispensable tools of our daily life such as bread knives, butcher knives and fruit knives to our lives.

The first examples of knives were made of stone in the Paleolithic Age. In the Bronze Age, knives began to be made of bronze, and over time, they were developed and the production of cutting and piercing weapons such as swords and daggers began.

In our culture, knives have value as weapons as well as being daily items. Old knives and weapons are kept and exhibited as heirlooms. Travelers who visited Anatolia talked about the clothes of the Turks and the knives and swords they wore.

We see that Konya was an important metal works and knife production center during the Seljuk and Ottoman periods. During the Republican Period, knife shops in the Konya bazaar continued to make knives. Sheep shearing knives, vineyard knives, kitchen knives, pocket knives (pocket knives) were produced.

WEAVING

The history of weaving is as old as human history. Due to the biological structure of humans, they must always cover themselves in order to protect themselves from the negative natural conditions of the environment in which they live and to avoid being affected by hard objects in the environment, cold-heat, sun and wind. For this reason, the first examples in the creation of textural surfaces are textural surfaces that are flexible in all directions, where people can feel comfortable and safe, and which will protect them and not hinder their movements. Over time, societies and geographical conditions have traditionalized textural surfaces and created artistic works and international examples with local and national identities. In addition to thin rugs made with traditional weaving methods, this weaving method is also used in other products that need to be thick, such as carpet pads, bags, saddlebags, sacks and sacks. Rug weaving, a type of kirkit weaving, is still continued in some parts of Antalya. 'Alafaradın Kilimi' in Küçükköy and Büyükköy in Korkuteli district and 'Barak Kilimi' in Kaş are among the most famous examples of rug weaving woven with woolen threads on wooden looms. Gilamik Weaving, which is still alive in Ormana, is woven on wooden looms called looms. Bed sheets, headscarves and cover sets for furniture are made with gilamik weaving, which is a type of silk weaving. In Antalya, which is a highly developed city in the field of weaving, silk weaving is also among the important handicrafts. In addition to silkworm farming, silk weaving also comes to the fore in Alanya and its surroundings. The silk taken from the cocoons is turned into many fabrics, especially the 'Alanya belt', on weaving looms.

blacksmithing

A blacksmith is a person who processes and repairs hooks, chains, agricultural tools and similar metal objects, as well as iron and similar metal parts, by bending, hammering or molding them with the help of hands and workbenches. The hot iron forging craft, which has been maintained for centuries, even millennia, is about to disappear... With the beginning of mechanization, the hand-made hot iron forging craft has suffered great damage. Although some of the great masters who devoted years to this craft continue their profession, many of them have closed their shops. But there is still a great need for hot iron forging. For example, in order to make a good axe, its blade must be thoroughly beaten and processed. You should definitely visit the Blacksmiths' Bazaar in Muratpaşa district of Antalya province to get acquainted with the art of blacksmithing and to support the local people by purchasing the products you like. In addition, Korkuteli district center, Elmalı district center, Ormana District of İbradı district are among the places in the city where blacksmithing is practiced and kept alive with traditional methods.

TIN MAKING

It is the profession of craftsmen who coat copper items with tin to ensure their long-term use. Tinning process is applied to prevent copper poisoning. Copper pots used without tinning can oxidize very quickly and cause poisoning called copper theft. Tinsmithing, which cannot be considered separately from copper art, appears as a traditional profession that is on the verge of extinction with the use of items such as plastic, steel and teflon instead of copper products. You can also see this tradition, which is kept alive by traveling tinsmiths in Antalya, in Elmalı district center and Muratpaşa district's Demirciler Bazaar.

PUMPKIN PROCESSING

Although gourds have different shapes and sizes, the type that is wide at the bottom and narrow at the top is generally used. Gourd, an annual plant, grows in many parts of Anatolia. Calabash, which has a wide range of uses, from musical instruments to rattles for babies, from jugs to decorative products, has recently been used as flower pots and chandeliers. Gourd processing is a very common profession, especially in Alanya.

SUSTAINABLE TOURISM RECOMMENDATIONS

  • You can help reduce traffic congestion, pollution and carbon emissions by choosing low-emission transportation options, using public transport, and exploring your destination on foot or by bicycle when safe and practical.
  • Using shampoos, lotions and gels containing microplastics when washing or swimming can cause serious damage to biodiversity in the long term. Many countries have banned these types of products. Take care not to use these products while traveling.
  • The ingredients in some sun protection products are very damaging to marine life and reefs, even in very small quantities and even when you shower in your hotel room. If a sunscreen contains any of these ingredients, look for an alternative that is safe for marine life instead: Oxybenzone, Benzophenone-1, Benzophenone-8, ODPABA, 4-Methylbenzylidene Camphor, 3-Benzylidene Camphor, nano-Titanium Dioxide, nano-Zinc Oxide, Octinoxate, Octocrylene.
  • Instead of single-use plastic products, use reusable alternatives or alternatives made from recycled paper products instead of plastic.
  • Keeping the temperature of your room at a comfortable level is important, but it is one of the biggest contributors to greenhouse gas emissions from accommodation. You can help by not setting the thermostat higher than necessary and ensuring that the heating/cooling units are turned off whenever you open doors or windows.
  • You can help reduce greenhouse gas emissions from water supply and disposal by taking shorter showers, turning off the tap when brushing your teeth and using low-flush options in toilets.
  • Food production accounts for a third of all greenhouse gas emissions. You can help reduce greenhouse gas emissions by ordering only what you can eat, choosing local produce over imported products and opting for more meat-free meals during your stay.
  • Support local businesses. Try to eat and shop at locally owned and operated businesses in the area. If you are buying souvenirs or memorabilia, see if you can find something handcrafted by a local artist or produced by a small business.
  • Respect people. Make sure you know and follow any local laws, customs or traditions. Check with your hotel about what to do when visiting the local area.
  • If you suspect that any child or person is being exploited or abused, report the problem to law enforcement (112 Emergency Call) immediately. If you are not sure how to do this safely, you can talk to the accommodation staff or your travel agent.
  • Protect biodiversity. Put your waste in recycling bins and cigarette butts in trashcans. Do not take anything from the places you visit, such as shells or stones, and likewise do not leave any waste behind.
  • We recommend you to avoid all activities that could harm the mental or physical health of animals. While feeding or petting wildlife species, including birds and fish, can be a fun and unique experience, it can be very harmful to animals. This can include giving food that is not good for them, having them being exposed to viruses and bacteria that they cannot cope with, or making them becoming too dependent on or trusting of humans. Avoid any behavior towards animals that would not be normal for them in the wild.
